CYTOSKELETON

Cytoskeleton

Definition- a network of thin tubes and filaments that crisscrosses the cytosol.

The cytoskeleton gives a cell shape and support the same way that tent poles give support and structure to a tent.

Parts of the cytoskeletion: Microtubules- protein tubes that hold organelles in place and are responsible for the movement of molecuees within the cell. Microfilaments- long threads of protein (actin); contribute to cell movement and contraction. Intermediate Filaments- rods anchoring the nucleus and other organelles; maintain internal shape of the nucleus. Cilia and Flagela- hairlike structures that extend from the surface of the cell; assist in cell movement. Centrioles- two short cylinders of microtubules at right angles from each other. They organize the microtubules of a cytoskeleton before cell divisiion. (Same function as basal bodies in plant cells)
